One of the things I love most about Opelika is the people. You see familiar faces when you walk downtown, business owners who know their customers, and people who genuinely care about the community they call home.
That doesn't happen by accident. It happens because people choose to invest in Opelika, and shopping local is one of the simplest ways we can do that.
As we head into the holiday shopping season, I want to encourage everyone to think about where we're spending our money and what that means for our community.
When you shop at a locally owned business, your money has the opportunity to go a little further. It helps support local employees, other small businesses, and the people who are investing their time and resources right here in Opelika.
According to Main Street America, more than 80% of Main Street small business owners live in the communities where their businesses are located. That means when you support a local business, you're often supporting a neighbor. Someone who shops here, raises a family here, and cares about what happens here.
Main Street America's research also found that every dollar spent at a small, independent business recirculates in the local economy three to four times more than a dollar spent at a chain business. That's a pretty powerful reminder of how much our everyday purchases matter.
And the impact goes beyond our wallets. Downtown businesses sponsor youth sports, support community events, contribute to local causes, and create places for people to connect and gather. They help give a community its own identity. I think we can all agree that Opelika has a pretty special one.
Here in Downtown Opelika, our local businesses are a big part of what makes this place special. They give us places to shop, eat, celebrate, and make memories. They create experiences you simply can't find anywhere else. And they are part of what makes people want to visit Opelika and keep coming back.
As the Director of Opelika Main Street, I get to see firsthand how much work, heart, and investment go into making our downtown and our community what it is. I also get to see what happens when people show up and support it.
You don't have to do all your shopping locally to make a difference. Just be intentional. Shop downtown when you can. Grab lunch at a local restaurant. Buy a gift card for someone. Share a post from a business you love. Tell a friend about a new shop you discovered.
Every purchase may seem small on its own, but together, those dollars make a real difference. They help our businesses grow, create opportunities, and keep Opelika moving forward.
This holiday season, I hope you'll join me in supporting the businesses that make our community what it is. Let's keep our dollars, our support, and our love for community right here in Opelika.
Because shopping local isn't just about where you spend your money. It's about investing in the place we call home.
