Opelika Main Street Opens Applications for 2026 Hometown Heroes Banner Program

OPELIKA, AL — Opelika Main Street is officially calling for applications for its 2026 Hometown Heroes Downtown Banner Program. The initiative, which has become a beloved tradition in the historic district, offers residents a unique opportunity to publicly honor local veterans and active-duty service members.

Each year, the program transforms the streets of Downtown Opelika into a living gallery of bravery and service. The 2026 display will coincide with the City of Opelika’s participation in the America 250 celebration, adding a layer of historic significance to this year's tribute as the nation marks its 250th anniversary.

“This program is just a small way for our community to honor the service and sacrifice of our local heroes,” said Kelsey Sullivan, Executive Director of Opelika Main Street. “Seeing these banners lining our streets reminds us all of the personal stories and sacrifices that have shaped our community and our country.”

Program Details:

  • Eligibility: Honorees must have a personal connection to Opelika and be currently serving on active duty, or be an honorably discharged or retired veteran.

  • Banner Specs: Each tribute features a 21"x 52" double-sided, high-quality banner displayed in the heart of downtown.

  • Cost: $200 per banner.

  • Availability: Participation is limited, with only 18 spaces remaining for the 2026 season.

Applications are being accepted through April 30, 2026, or until all spots are filled. Because space is limited and demand is high, Opelika Main Street encourages families to submit their heroes as soon as possible to ensure their inclusion in this historic year.
